There are a number of civic action groups, organizations and movements that operate in the Health Sector in South Africa.
The African Health Leadership Initiative works to bridge the implementation gap between policy formulation and frontline action. It stimulates progress on national health priorities through project-based action, locally-grounded scaling and in-country leadership development. The Initiative recognizes and augments capacity that exists within national health systems – across Ministries of Health and among other government officials, clinicians, community-based service providers and within civil society and the private sector.

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation is based in Cape Town, South Africa and is run in association with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town's Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine. The Foundation operates community sites in greater Cape Town's Nyanga and Masiphumelele districts.
